Yu Ren's Award-Winning Side Table with Lights Inspired by Iconic Pac Man Game

The Pac Man side table stands out with its unique properties. It is not merely a table but also a light source. The brightness of the light can be controlled by adjusting the angle of the handle, with the light becoming brighter as the handle is raised. This multi-purpose item is not only functional but also serves as a high-value decoration, suitable for various scenarios. The light strip uses a low-temperature light source, ensuring it emits no heat.

The table is realized through a plate heat bending process. The upper and lower panels are made of marble, and the handle is partially embedded with the light strip. The user can control the intensity of the light and its color temperature by adjusting the handle and touching it on the left and right, respectively.

With dimensions of 450mm in width, 450mm in depth, and 500mm in height, the Pac Man side table is a compact, smart piece of furniture. It is designed to be placed next to a lounge chair, providing light for reading. The strongest light line is achieved when the handle is at a vertical 90 degrees, and the lighting function can be turned off by lowering the handle.

The design project started in Shenzhen in June 2022 and was completed in September 2022. The design was inspired by changes in people's lifestyles and consumption patterns due to factors such as the pandemic and consumption upgrades. The aim was to develop an interactive and fun product that not only improves daily life but also enhances the intelligence, convenience, and comfort of home life.

The biggest challenge in the design process was to combine the "classic and future". Incorporating the light source function, which represents the future, into the product shape was a significant challenge. The goal was to meet basic needs while providing users with fun and happiness. The Pac Man side table is a product with childhood significance, cleverly integrating the light source function into the handle shape.

Yu Ren's Pac Man design was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2023. This prestigious award is granted to marvelous, outstanding, and trendsetting creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. It recognizes products and ideas that advance art, science, design, and technology, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
