Cohesion: A Symphony of Sustainable Elegance

Andersen Chiu Crafts a Visionary Residential Sample House

Exploring the intersection of sustainability and aesthetic appeal, Andersen Chiu's latest residential sample house, "Cohesion," is a testament to innovative design and environmental consciousness. This project not only showcases a harmonious blend of materials but also sets a new benchmark for sustainable living spaces.

The concept of "Cohesion" emerges from the deliberate use of clear glass and reusable timber, creating a space that is both visually expansive and environmentally considerate. Chiu's approach to the sample home is rooted in the philosophy of enduring design, where the beauty of the space aligns with the guest's vision and a deep respect for nature. The selection of natural building materials such as wood veneer and granite underscores the project's commitment to durability and sustainability, with the added benefit of recyclability post-demolition.

Distinctive for its timber and veneer finishes, "Cohesion" integrates these elements with fair-faced concrete, inviting guests to discover the space through meticulous design details. The incorporation of strip lighting and hardware accents introduces a Wabi-Sabi aesthetic, infusing the residence with contemporary flair. Ingeniously, wood veneer is also used to adorn beams, enhancing spatial perception and crafting a seamless design narrative.

The realization of "Cohesion" is marked by the strategic use of materials and lighting. The fair-faced concrete TV wall, set at an oblique angle, is complemented by a wall lamp, while the granite container beneath serves a dual purpose, merging with the closet of an adjacent room to optimize hallway space. The use of clear glass for display cabinets injects vitality into the environment, and the back wall's unconventional combination of veneer and gray wallpaper adds a layer of sophistication.

Spanning 42.97 square meters, the design of "Cohesion" is a choreographed dance of linear and circular forms. Behind the TV wall lies a windowless spare room, illuminated by ceiling strip lights and a timber grid partition that ensures a well-lit ambiance. The bedroom continues the linear motif with a wooden headboard and wall-mounted drawer, while a round mirror unites the various design elements, creating a harmonious and flexible living space.

Chiu's design faced several challenges, particularly in the creation of unconventional elements that would bring vibrancy and life to the space. The solution was to install a custom wardrobe that maximized storage without compromising on style, and to introduce a granite-legged dining table that echoed the design theme of the communal area. Woven dining chairs and a round pendant light complete the setting, exuding a sense of gentle durability and elegance.

The "Cohesion" project, which unfolded between November 2021 and January 2022 in New Taipei City, Taiwan, is a showcase of Andersen Chiu's commitment to innovative design and sustainability. Upon entering, guests are greeted by a sunlit avenue framed by wood and concrete, leading to a space that celebrates the art of imperfection. The use of clear glass for display and the strategic removal of doors and partitions emphasize the material textures and spaciousness, inviting guests to unleash their imagination and explore the potential of the space.

This remarkable design has been recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design category for 2024, a testament to its exceptional creativity, professional execution, and contribution to the field of design. "Cohesion" stands as a shining example of how sustainable practices can be seamlessly integrated into luxurious living spaces, inspiring awe and wonder in all who experience it.
