Mariam's Library: A Beacon of Kindness and Learning

Architect Mai Al Busairi's Humanitarian Masterpiece

In a world craving kindness, Mai Al Busairi's Mariam's Library stands as a testament to the transformative power of design, art, and architecture. This project, born from the desire to give back, has become a cornerstone of education and community support in Tanzania.

Mariam's Library is not just a building; it's a symbol of hope and progress. The brainchild of Mai Al Busairi and her team, including Alyaa Al Roomi, the library is a product of the Parallel Gives Program, an initiative dedicated to extending support and expertise globally. The design's unique properties lie in its dual purpose: to align with the local curriculum and to serve as a communal hub for the Beit Ras School students and the Mwanyanya community in Zanzibar.

The construction of Mariam’s Library is a blend of traditional and modern techniques, ensuring durability while respecting the environment. The use of locally sourced clay bricks and the strategic design of the structure to utilize natural elements like rain and sunlight underscore the project's commitment to sustainability. The design phase, supported by advanced software like Rhino and Grasshopper, facilitated the creation of a space that is both functional and aesthetically pleasing.

Spanning 81 square meters, the library's interior is meticulously planned. The slanted roof not only aids in rainwater runoff but also adds to the architectural intrigue. Customized brick perforations enhance ventilation and create a dance of light and shadow, enriching the learning experience. The library's layout is divided into a reading and study area, designed to maximize space, and a communal zone for interactive activities, fostering a sense of togetherness.

Operated under the supervision of the school principal, Mariam's Library encourages interaction and learning. Its design promotes an inclusive atmosphere, inviting visitors to immerse themselves in knowledge and community spirit. The project's swift 34-day completion from December 2023 to January 2024 in Zanzibar is a testament to the team's dedication and efficient planning.

The research and development phase of Mariam’s Library involved significant collaboration with local stakeholders, ensuring the design met the community's needs. Challenges such as material sourcing, budget management, and health concerns were navigated with precision and care. The result is a space that not only serves its functional purpose but also stands as a beacon of social responsibility and determination.

Mariam’s Library is more than an architectural feat; it's a catalyst for change. Awarded the Iron A' Social Design Award in 2024, the library reflects Parallel Studio's commitment to global welfare. Its impact is profound, fostering education and community growth, and setting a precedent for socially responsible design.
