Commodia: A Chest of Drawers with Organic Surfaces and Shapes

Commodia is not your ordinary chest of drawers. Its high-end appearance is achieved through the use of strongly figured wood species and exceptional workmanship. The organic shapes and surfaces give it a distinct aesthetic, while the contrast between the wood color of the surfaces and the edges further emphasizes its shape. What sets Commodia apart is the attention to detail given to both visible and hidden surfaces, ensuring a seamless and continuous aesthetic concept.

The manufacturing process of Commodia combines traditional craftsmanship with modern technology. Master craftsmen utilize their skills to apply complex veneer motives and achieve impeccable manual finishes. The organic shaped surfaces of the furniture are made using 3D veneer technology, resulting in a harmonious and visually striking design. The selection of matched pairs of wood species adds to the overall contrast and harmony of the piece.

Measuring 1800mm in width, 610mm in depth, and 720mm in height, Commodia is not only a functional piece of furniture but also a work of art. Its organic outline invites observers to explore its sensual curves and shapes from different perspectives. The figured wood veneers, with their natural beauty, encourage a contemplative approach.

The Commodia design project began in May 2011 in Geneva and was completed in October 2012. In December 2012, Commodia was selected as a Final Selection in the London International Creative Competition (LICC), further validating its exceptional design.

Eckhard Beger's approach to designing Commodia was product-driven, with a focus on integrating organic shapes with the dimensions of a functional chest of drawers. Extensive research and analysis were conducted to ensure the proportions and dimensions were aesthetically pleasing and ergonomic. The iterative design process involved translating individual curves into a harmonious 3-dimensional outline, resulting in numerous modifications and refinements.

Commodia has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2013, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life through art, science, design, and technology.
