Screw Chair: A Multifunctional Furniture Design

Designed by Arash Shojaei

Inspired by Japanese Minimalism, the Screw Chair is a unique and versatile piece of furniture that combines simplicity, functionality, and space-saving design.

During the history of furniture, there have been numerous developments to make them more user-friendly. In modern culture, the need for multi-functional products that take up minimal space is paramount. The Screw Chair draws inspiration from a simple wooden box, allowing it to be used as a seat, table, and even a shelf. Its collectible nature enables easy storage on a shelf, while its simple form and use of natural materials add to its appeal. The design embodies the principles of Japanese Minimalism, focusing on the five senses, particularly touch and vision, to enhance the user experience.

What sets the Screw Chair apart is its simplicity and functionality. It can be easily flat-packed and assembled, making it highly portable and ideal for space-conscious living. With the ability to transform into a table or shelf, just a few pieces of this design can meet all the needs of a modern minimalist living space.

The technological aspect of this project revolves around the use of screws and bolts to secure the wooden parts of the body and legs. This allows for easy interchangeability. While bamboo can be used for the legs and backrest in the concept, mass production would require Russian wood and steel screw/bolt joints for durability. The seating area is made of polyurethane foam with a fabric cover, ensuring comfort and ergonomics.

The Screw Chair measures 500mm (W) x 500mm (D) x 980mm (H) and weighs just 5kg, while maintaining perfect stability. Its lightweight nature makes it easy to move around and adapt to different spaces.

Inspired by the economic pressures faced by the middle class and low-income segments of society, the Screw Chair caters to the need for simple, affordable, and versatile furniture. Unlike traditional single-use furniture, this design offers multiple functionalities. Minimalism plays a crucial role in its creation, as it aims to engage the senses and provide a sensory liaison through its clean and uncluttered design.

The Screw Chair was developed in Iran between 2013 and early 2014, overcoming the challenge of creating a product that can be easily assembled from a flat-packed box into a chair, table, or shelf. All the parts are conveniently stored within the seating box, occupying minimal space.

Winner of the prestigious A' Design Award in 2014, the Screw Chair exemplifies a well-designed, practical, and innovative creation that meets professional and industrial requirements. Its integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world, providing fulfillment and positive feelings to its users.
