Dimdim: A Multi-functional Cradle and Rocking Chair

Lisse Van Cauwenberge drew inspiration for Dimdim from the desire to create a cradle for their godchild. The goal was to design a functional and beautiful piece of furniture that would not only serve its purpose but also be a cherished item for years to come.

What sets Dimdim apart from other cradles and rocking chairs is its multi-functionality. Each rocking chair is made from wood with steel supports and finished in a walnut veneer, giving it a timeless and sophisticated look. When two Dimdim chairs are joined together, they can be transformed into a baby cradle. This unique feature is made possible by two hidden clamps located beneath the seat, ensuring a secure and stable connection.

The realization of Dimdim involves the use of bended wood and steel, resulting in a sturdy and durable piece of furniture. The walnut veneer adds a touch of elegance and warmth to the design, making it a perfect addition to any modern nursery or living space.

With its outside measurements of 1000/620/870 mm, Dimdim offers a comfortable and cozy space for babies to rest and sleep. The chairs can be easily rotated a quarter, allowing for a seamless transition between the rocking chair and cradle functions.

Lisse Van Cauwenberge conducted extensive research to ensure that Dimdim meets the needs of parents and their growing families. By talking to parents of different ages, they discovered that traditional cradles often end up unused and stored away. The goal was to create a design that would stay with the family throughout the years, becoming a cherished piece of furniture that can be passed down from generation to generation.

Despite facing challenges in creating the prototype without the help of any companies, Lisse Van Cauwenberge successfully brought their vision to life. The result is a stunning and functional design that combines the beauty of a rocking chair with the practicality of a cradle.

Dimdim has received recognition for its outstanding design and innovation. In 2014, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids, and Children's Products Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that showcase exceptional expertise, creativity, and technical characteristics.
