The FA2, a groundbreaking biometric access device, combines cutting-edge technology with sleek design to provide a seamless and secure access solution. Crafted by renowned designer Travis Baldwin, this device is revolutionizing the way we control access to our spaces.

The inspiration behind the FA2 was to address the growing demand for a biometric access device that not only provided high functionality but also added a touch of elegance to its surroundings. Baldwin drew inspiration from the iconic HAL computer light from the movie 2001, using its spherical shape as the foundation for the FA2's design. By integrating the 13 front-facing components into a simple and streamlined form, the FA2 achieves a harmonious balance between aesthetics and functionality.

What sets the FA2 apart from other biometric devices is its unique combination of features. The device captures both iris and facial biometric data, referencing a database to determine user privileges. This allows the FA2 to grant access by unlocking doors or logging users in. To ensure accurate and easy self-alignment, user feedback features such as LEDs and a flash are built into the device. The front cover, consisting of two parts, not only adds a touch of sophistication but also allows for duo-tone colors, drawing the eye with its fine details.

The realization of the FA2 involved a meticulous design process. Baldwin utilized sketches, CAD design, and prototypes to optimize the device's function, assembly, and aesthetics. Special attention was given to beautifying the exterior case, which houses the complex internal parts. The result is a device that seamlessly blends into any environment, whether it be a corporate office, an industrial facility, or a modern home.

Technical specifications of the FA2 include ISO/IEC 19794-6 compliant iris images, ISO/IEC 19794-5 compliant facial images, USB 2.0 connectivity, integrated flash for face capture, IR illumination for iris images, and support for various operating systems including Windows and Linux. The device also features an integrated mic and speaker for audio I/O, making it a versatile and user-friendly solution.

The FA2 project began in September 2009 in San Francisco, California, and was completed in June 2010. The design and engineering work took place in multiple locations, including San Mateo, California, and Bristol, UK. The final products were assembled and tested in San Mateo before shipping out to customers in August 2010.

The FA2 has received widespread acclaim and recognition for its innovative design. In 2014, it was awarded the prestigious A' Design Award in the Security, Safety, and Surveillance Products Design category. This accolade is a testament to the FA2's exceptional design, technical prowess, and ability to inspire awe and admiration.
