Cerrada Reforma 108: A Unique Residential Design

An Innovative Approach to Positive and Negative Space

Cerrada Reforma 108 stands out from other residential designs with its innovative use of space. The rectangular plot, measuring ten by twenty meters, is only partially occupied by a longitudinal block measuring five by twenty meters, which houses the living areas. The remaining half of the plot is left open, creating a negative space that is visually connected to the built block.

The transparency of the façade along the side of the house allows for a seamless connection between the interior and exterior spaces. The open counterpart, which has the same dimensions as the built block, is defined by a solid wall that provides privacy and closes off visibility towards the neighbors.

One of the notable features of Cerrada Reforma 108 is the use of adobe block walls for the structure. This traditional building material, made with sand, clay, water, and organic material, was molded into brick shapes and sun-dried on-site. Besides being cost-effective, adobe offers excellent thermal properties, keeping the house warm in winter and cool in summer.

The design specifications of Cerrada Reforma 108 include a mix of materials on the floors and walls. Marble, washed concrete, quarry, and wood were used for the floors, while apparent concrete, vinyl paint, marble, and tile adorn the walls.

The project, which started in May 2011 and finished in July 2012, presented several challenges. The strict adherence to the division of two equal blocks on the plot required meticulous planning and execution. Additionally, the construction of the adobe block walls on-site posed technical and structural design challenges.

Cerrada Reforma 108 has received recognition for its exceptional design. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in 2014 in the Architecture, Building, and Structure Design category. This prestigious award celebrates designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
