Guide: A Revolutionary Library Shelving System

Breaking the Stereotype and Guiding Users to Books Efficiently

Finding a book in a library can be a daunting task, with existing systems failing to efficiently communicate the location of books to users. This inspired designer Suman Swarup Prusty to create Guide, a library shelving system that revolutionizes the way users interact with books.

Guide is not just a book rack; it is a highly aesthetic and fully functional system that breaks the stereotype of a stagnant library space. It transforms libraries into intuitive and communicative environments, making it easier for users to find the books they need in the shortest possible time.

One of the unique features of Guide is its effective color-coded interaction between the user and the product. Each row of shelves is assigned a specific color, allowing users to quickly identify the correct row where their desired book is located. Additionally, the shelves are self-adjustable, accommodating books of any size. The lower couple of shelves can be positioned at an angle, ensuring better visibility of book names and eliminating the need for users to bend down to identify books placed on lower shelves.

The design of Guide is realized using sheet metal for the library front, which is precisely bent in a RAS machine to achieve the desired form. The front is attached to an index panel made of Pre-Lam MDF, and the shelves are made of sheet metal and hung with the help of cantilever support. Signages, made of clear acrylic, are snapped into the index panel, providing users with clear indications of the exact location of books.

Guide comes in two sizes: a single unit measuring 1950mm(h) x 350mm(d) x 1095mm(w), and a back-to-back unit measuring 1950mm x 650mm(d) x 1095mm(w). Additional rack additions increase the width by 900mm each, allowing for customization based on the library's needs.

The development of Guide started in September 2013 and was completed in January 2014 in Bangalore, India. Throughout the design process, the team at Featherlite faced several challenges, including changing the existing library system in terms of design, looks, and usability without compromising the basic function. They also focused on making the product economical by using minimum materials and ensuring ease of manufacturing and transportation.

Guide has received recognition for its innovative design and functionality. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2014. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Guide is not just a book rack; it is a guide that transforms library spaces into intuitive and communicative environments. With its unique features and innovative design, Guide revolutionizes the way users interact with books, making the library experience more efficient and enjoyable.
