Forest Lodge ECO House: A Sustainable Urban Oasis

Blending Modern Design with Heritage Charm

Inspired by the opportunity to create a contemporary ECO house in the heart of Sydney's heritage precinct, designer Chris Knierim has crafted a truly unique and sustainable living space. The Forest Lodge ECO House stands as a testament to modern design while seamlessly blending in with its 140-year-old neighbors.

The Forest Lodge ECO House is not your typical residential house. It is a modern masterpiece that incorporates innovative sustainability ideas and technologies, setting it apart from other homes. With a width of only 4.9 meters and a total land area of 89m2, this house is a prime example of intelligent and efficient design.

One of the key strengths of the Forest Lodge ECO House is its ability to reflect contemporary architecture while harmonizing with its surroundings. The design team took great care to ensure that the house complements the neighboring terraces, creating a seamless blend of old and new. This integration into the urban history of Sydney is a testament to the designer's vision and attention to detail.

The Forest Lodge ECO House is a showcase of sustainability. It incorporates various eco-friendly features and technologies that make it a truly green residence. From solar tubes that store heat in an underground storage cell to water pipes heated by solar energy, this house utilizes innovative systems to provide free heating and hot water. The use of second-hand building materials and the sorting of excess materials for recycling further contribute to its eco-friendly nature.

With a land size of 89m2 and an internal living space of 120m2, the Forest Lodge ECO House maximizes every inch of available space. It features three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a laundry area. The entire house is illuminated by energy-efficient LED lighting, equivalent to only three standard light globes. Double glazing on all windows ensures optimal insulation, while a 3,500-liter underground water tank promotes water conservation.

The Forest Lodge ECO House has achieved an impressive 8.5-plus Star rating for energy efficiency and thermal performance, one of the highest in Australia. This exceptional rating is attributed to features such as double-glazed LowE windows, roof and vertical gardens, LED lighting, solar heating, internal and external solar blinds, and water features for evaporative cooling. The house is so well-insulated that air conditioning is unnecessary.

The construction of the Forest Lodge ECO House began in July 2012 and was completed in August 2013. Located in Forest Lodge, Sydney's heritage precinct, this project has garnered attention and recognition. It was even featured on the television series Grand Designs Australia in November 2013.

Chris Knierim's research and experience in sustainable construction, gained through working on international projects, greatly influenced the design of the Forest Lodge ECO House. His vision for a tailored sustainability model in Australian conditions has resulted in a truly remarkable and environmentally conscious residence.

The Forest Lodge ECO House has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in 2014. This award recognizes the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill demonstrated in the design. The house evokes positive feelings, amazement, and wonder, making it a true architectural gem.
