Lambda: A Unique and Theatrical Residential Villa in Singapore

A Unity of Architecture and Interior Design

The client requested an interior which was unique in character and totally unlike its suburban neighbours. The interiors were to be grand, opulent, and theatrical, but compliant with feng shui considerations. The aim was for repeated symmetrical spaces differentiated by palette and materials, especially the contrast of light and dark first encountered with the external form of the building.

A unity between architecture and interior design is achieved with Villa Lambda, designed by Mercurio Design Lab Srl. From the outside, Lambda is a powerfully integrated three-dimensional form. But once inside, it becomes apparent that this is actually an exploration in four-dimensional design, as the aerodynamic external form generates the interiors, including a number of customized furnishings and fittings. The drama and invention of the external form is matched by a powerful, opulent, and theatrical spatial elaboration.

The house consists of a basement, two storeys, and an attic. The hub of the house is the dining hall, which rises over two storeys. The second storey includes two symmetrical bedrooms of equal size but in different styles. The third storey attic space includes a large study with a customized red painted table looking out to the terrace. The attic also provides three smaller rooms, including a prayer room. In the basement, apart from service rooms, there is a gym, a sauna, and a wooden wine cellar.

The interior works hand in hand with the architecture. The house is mostly cladded with Travertino Navona and Travertino Noce, creating an interesting contrast between darker and lighter tones. In the dining room hall that spans two floors and is visible from the second-floor gallery, stands a dining table made of a slab of white quartz ten meters long; the legs of the table are two large stainless steel stems shaped like the side stanchions of the house with their typical triangular profile.

Villa Lambda, located in Singapore, showcases the meticulous attention to detail and the unique vision of Mercurio Design Lab Srl. The design process began in 2011, and construction of the villa was completed in 2013. The idea of the interiors was for it to be an extension of the exteriors of the villa. Hence, the ten-meter-long, white quartz customized dining table with two large stainless steel stems with a triangular profile references the stanchions of the house. The customized bar counter with its travertine-clad face seems to grow out of the floor, while the triangulated legs of the pool table also draw a connection with the external form of the house.

Villa Lambda has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2015, it was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
