Catapult: Urban Light Design

Enhancing City Life with Innovative Street Lighting

Lighting has the power to enhance life in the city. No longer simply functional, it has become a creative art, contributing to attractive and inviting atmospheres that encourage night-time socializing and enrich the city’s night life. The Catapult urban light design, created by Mostafa Arvand & Sepideh Golgoon, embodies this concept, offering a unique and harmonious look for any public space.

The Catapult lamps were inspired by the form of a catapult, and the designers have instilled a new sense of light into these innovative fixtures. These lamps go beyond being a simple LED light source; they are an integral part of the street, adding a touch of style and beauty to the urban landscape.

One of the unique properties of the Catapult design is its ability to create a two-way light at different heights, adjustable in various angles. This feature not only provides functional lighting but also adds a decorative element to outdoor spaces. The lamps are designed to complement the street scene during the day, playing an architectural role and enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal.

The Catapult lamps are made using high-grade aluminum, which ensures their durability and appeal. The designers have utilized minimalist, robust extrusions specifically designed for these lamps, maximizing their visual impact. The lamps are manufactured using precision techniques, with electrostatic paint and carefully laid out electronic components. The use of cast aluminum and bronze allows for the formation of three-dimensional parts, resulting in a visually striking design.

The Catapult design is available in two sizes: small (Width 500 mm x Depth 250 mm x Height 800 mm) and big (Width 1000 mm x Depth 500 mm x Height 1600 mm). Despite their size, these lamps are lightweight, weighing less than 1500-2700 grams. The use of new materials with high mechanical and physical properties ensures that the lamps won't scratch or lose their color over time, thanks to nano coatings.

These urban light fixtures are ideal for sidewalks, parks, walkways, bike paths, public areas, and building entryways. They provide medium intensity lighting for areas that require both functionality and ambiance. The Catapult lamps can be installed at different angles, allowing for versatile placement and customization.

The Catapult design project began in July 2014 in Tehran and was completed in October 2014. It was exhibited at the Iran Lighting Design Conference in 2014, showcasing its innovative approach to urban lighting. The design is the result of extensive research on urban lighting and the need for low-power-consumption lamps in the market.

The Catapult design has received recognition for its excellence and innovation. It was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2015. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, evoking positive emotions and wonder.
