Speedo USA's Nemesis Fins: A Blend of Bio-mimicry and Innovative Material

The inspiration behind the Nemesis Fins comes from the natural world. Bio-mimicry, specifically the Humpback Whale's pectoral fin, played a significant role in shaping this unique design. The result is a fin that not only enhances the swimmer's performance but also offers unparalleled comfort.

What makes the Nemesis Fins stand out is its unique properties. The fins are designed to be the most comfortable on the market, with ergonomic foot pocket features and floating properties. These features work together to elevate the hips and feet into an improved streamline body position, enhancing the swimmer's performance.

The realization of this design was made possible through the use of PLUSFoam®, a 100% recyclable foam. This performance-based material is crafted using a combination of reclaimed post-consumer material, post-manufacturing scrap, and virgin material. Not only is PLUSFoam® environmentally friendly, but it also outperforms traditional EVA in several categories, including rebound, compression, and elongation.

The design process was a collaborative effort between the I.D. Workshop and Speedo. The team aimed to create a lightweight fin that would improve the swimmer's body positioning. The choice of material was crucial in achieving this goal. The EVA foam material provided the perfect blend of soft comfort and rigidity, meeting the fitness swimmer's strength requirements and offering a great workout.

The Nemesis Fins were completed in October 2013 and hit the shelves in August 2014. The design was recognized with the Platinum A' Sporting Goods, Fitness and Recreation Equipment Design Award in 2015. This prestigious award recognizes world-class, exceptional, and highly innovative designs that contribute to societal wellbeing.
