A Lamp That Symbolizes the Power of Light

The LIFE lamp is a unique and thought-provoking creation that goes beyond the typical focus on function and appearance. Jolly Yan Yee Kee, the designer, wanted to pay homage to the values of light and evoke a deeper emotional connection with the user. The transparent acrylic tube shell allows observers to witness the captivating scene inside the lamp, emphasizing the contrast between positive and negative space.

The lamp's design incorporates a disassemblable acrylic tube, allowing for easy bulb replacement. The base, made of aluminum, provides stability and holds the two acrylic parts together. The lamp's mechanism includes an electromagnet that creates a temporary repelling force, causing the sperm to jump upwards when the lamp is switched on. When turned off, an attractive force brings the sperm back to its original position.

With a diameter of 200mm and a height of 600mm, the LIFE lamp stands as a striking piece of functional art. Its minimalist design and symbolic elements make it a captivating addition to any space. The lamp's interaction is simple yet profound - when switched on, the sperm swims towards the egg, and the light bulb glows simultaneously, creating a mesmerizing visual and emotional experience for the user.

The LIFE lamp was conceptualized and realized by Jolly Yan Yee Kee in Hong Kong. The project, which started in February 2015 and concluded in April 2015, was exhibited as "Best of Show" in the Annual Show of the School of Design at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in June 2015. The lamp's design was recognized with a Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures category in 2016, highlighting its exceptional creativity, technical prowess, and innovation.
