Deutsche Bahn Add-onsTrain Improvement Concept
On behalf of the Magazine Wirtschaftswoche, three international Design-Teams were asked to create new logistics concepts, attractive interiors and contemporary facilities for the railway of the future. The OFFICE GERHARDT KELLERMANN focused on the current problems and near future of the trains. How can we improve the fast changing tasks with new thinking and concepts? Its not about another train of the future which has to run for the next 50 years, society nowadays changes fast!
With Add-ons, the Munich-based Studio RELVAOKELLERMANN presents an economic approach for the upgrade and modernization of existing trains. The concept of Add-ons consists of individual elements that can be built onto trains or their interior. Due to the long life period of existing trains, Add-ons offer targeted solutions without the need for large or new developments. They can quickly and simply adapt to the rapid development in passenger transport and its problems and requirements. The work is limited to three examples for three observations.
The first Add-on is an adjustable neck rest made out of flexible rubber (RIM Molding). It is easy to clean and can be adjusted freely. The second Add-on is an induction recharging pad inserted in the backrest table. And the third Add-on is a fresh air and panorama compartment. Ventilation slots on the bottom of the side walls provide air circulation, with the airflow adjusted to the speed of the train. Large windows counteract the constricting tunnel effect of the seating compartments, while mirrored doors increase the spatial effect of a compartment.
The Add-ons by RELVAOKELLERMANN offer an innovative and practical solution for improving existing trains without the need for extensive modifications. By focusing on targeted elements, they can adapt to the changing needs of passenger transport and provide a more comfortable and enjoyable experience for travelers.
The Deutsche Bahn Add-ons project was completed in just one week, showcasing the team's ability to quickly develop and implement creative solutions. Despite the short timeframe and non-profit nature of the project, the Add-ons received recognition and were awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Vehicle, Mobility, and Transportation Design category in 2016. This prestigious award acknowledges the outstanding expertise and innovation demonstrated by the Add-ons, which combine technical excellence with artistic skill to create a remarkable design that elicits positive emotions and amazement.
