EHEDESIGN: Transforming Historical Space into a Modern Work Space

Preserving Cultural Relics while Embracing Modern Design

EHEDESIGN, a renowned design brand led by designer Ma Hui, has successfully transformed a historic silk reeling workshop into a modern work space. Located in the Grand Canal of China Tongyigong Cotton Mill, this project showcases the perfect balance between preserving cultural relics and integrating contemporary design elements.

The Tongyigong Cotton Mill, built in 1896 during the Qing dynasty, is the only remaining industrial building heritage in Hangzhou. As a national key cultural relic, it required careful consideration and adherence to strict regulations set by the Zhejiang Garden Cultural Relics Bureau. The design team faced the challenge of meeting functional requirements while respecting the historical significance and traditional architecture of the space.

The design approach focused on retaining the original structure of the cultural relics while renovating the internal pattern to create a modern and fashionable office space. The use of emulsion paint, coating, and BOLON vinyl tile helped to highlight the historical features while adding a contemporary touch.

The net area of the transformed space is 1565m2, providing ample room for the EHE Design team to work and collaborate. The necessary illumination and air conditioning systems are cleverly hidden behind white cabinets and the timber frame, ensuring a clean and uncluttered aesthetic.

This project has received recognition for its outstanding design. In 2016, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Interior Space, Retail, and Exhibition Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate exceptional expertise, innovation, and artistic skill.
