Milan Chess Set: A Fusion of Architecture and Strategy

Combining the Rich History of Milan with the Classic Game of Chess

The Milan Chess Set, designed by Davide Chiesa, is a unique and innovative creation that merges the architectural wonders of Milan with the strategic game of chess. This 3D-printed masterpiece showcases the evolution of a modern European city and serves as a bridge between the past and the future.

Chiesa's inspiration for this project stems from his personal experience as a designer and his childhood memories. The changing skyline of Milan, with its emergence of skyscrapers in the central part of the city, served as the catalyst for this extraordinary design. Combining this modern transformation with the nostalgic recollection of his father teaching him to play chess, Chiesa decided to bring the city's iconic buildings onto a chessboard.

The Milan Chess Set tells a captivating story of the evolution of a European metropolis. It beautifully illustrates the connection between ancient and modern monuments, mirroring the harmonious blend of cultural traditions. This design serves as a testament to the importance of cultural exchange and interaction, particularly during the Expo semester of 2015.

Utilizing the cutting-edge technology of 3D printing, Chiesa brought his vision to life. The use of sintered nylon, a modern and innovative material, adds a fresh and tactile element to the project. This material, combined with the quick and accessible nature of 3D printing, allowed for the efficient creation of the intricate chess pieces and chessboard.

The Milan Chess Set specifications include a chessboard measuring W 350 x D 350 x H 10 and chess pieces measuring W 60 x D 40 x H 40. Each piece represents a significant monument in Milan, such as the Duomo, Torre Velasca, and Unicredit Tower. These architectural marvels dance across the chessboard, creating new urban skylines with every move.

The Milan Chess Set made its debut at the Salone del Mobile in April 2015, after months of meticulous research and design. Chiesa's exploration into the miniaturization of monuments and the representation of different realities influenced his creative process. The challenge of selecting the perfect buildings to fill the chessboard was overcome by choosing structures with the right proportions and a style variation that was both intriguing and innovative.

This exceptional design has garnered recognition and acclaim, earning the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products category in 2016. This accolade is a testament to the outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill displayed in the Milan Chess Set. It evokes positive emotions, amazement, and wonder, captivating both chess enthusiasts and design enthusiasts alike.

The Milan Chess Set is not only a functional chess game but also a work of art that embodies the essence of Milan's architectural heritage. It serves as a reminder of the city's rich history and its continuous evolution. This fusion of architecture and strategy invites individuals to engage in a game that transcends time and space, offering a unique and immersive experience.
