New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang: A Harmonious Blend of Ancient and Modern

Preserving the Charm of Ancient Chinese Architecture through Light and Shadow

The New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang, designed by LDPi (China Branch), is a testament to the beauty and elegance of ancient Chinese architecture. This renovation project aimed to enhance the existing charm by creating a mesmerizing play of light and shadow, rather than illuminating every element of the architecture.

Nestled in the town of Xiepu, in the Zhenhai district of Ningbo, the New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang covers an expansive area of 50,000 square meters. It boasts six guest room sections, housing a total of 116 guest rooms. What sets this resort apart is its preservation of the largest and most intact ancient architectural styles of the Ming and Qing dynasties in China.

With its Ma Tau wallwatts, traditional Chinese courtyards, ancestral halls, opera stages, stone alleys, and old houses, the New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang is a cultural treasure of the Zhejiang Province. The designers at LDPi (China Branch) recognized the importance of preserving these architectural gems while infusing them with a touch of modernity.

The lighting design for the resort primarily utilizes LED fixtures for the exterior facade. Small projectors, linear bars, and street lights work in harmony to highlight the intricate details of the ancient architecture. Additionally, a few fluorescent lights for wall lamps and HIT for in-ground recessed lights add a subtle glow to the surroundings.

One of the key challenges faced during this project was the lack of existing CAD drawings for the facade and details of the resort. The designers had to create these drawings from scratch, ensuring that every lighting fixture was strategically placed to enhance the overall visual impact. By conducting experiments and testing different lighting fixtures, they were able to determine the optimal beam angles, wattage, and color temperature.

The lighting design process began in July 2013 and the resort officially opened its doors on June 20, 2014. Throughout this journey, the designers at LDPi (China Branch) meticulously studied the conditions of the site, taking photographs to serve as references for the conceptual lighting design. This allowed them to showcase how the resort would look after the renovation, with a new layer of lighting breathing life into the ancient architecture.

As a hotel, the operation of the New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang remains in the hands of the property management. The lighting design, however, serves as a testament to the seamless integration of ancient and modern elements, creating a truly enchanting ambiance for guests to enjoy.

The New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang has been recognized for its exceptional design and innovation. It was awarded the prestigious Silver A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2016. This accolade is a testament to the resort's outstanding expertise, remarkable technical characteristics, and splendid artistic skill.

Step into a world where ancient meets modern, where light and shadow dance harmoniously, and experience the captivating beauty of the New Century Resort Ningbo Shiqifang.
