Self-Transforming Biological Skin: The Future of Sportswear

A Revolutionary Garment That Reacts to Your Body

Inspired by ancient bacteria, the bioLogic team from Tangible Media Group has created a groundbreaking self-transforming biological skin that revolutionizes the world of sportswear. This innovative garment uses humidity-sensitive bacteria to create a synthetic breathing skin that reacts to the wearer's body heat and perspiration, providing instant cooling and comfort.

In a bio lab at MIT, the team discovered the unique behavior of Bacillus Subtilis Natto, a bacteria that expands and contracts in response to atmospheric moisture. They harnessed this behavior and applied it to fabric using custom-made micro-resolution printing technology. The result is a bio-actuated material that can be activated by perspiration and body heat.

The synthetic bio-skin is designed to react to the wearer's sweat and heat maps. Tiny vents on the fabric open and close, allowing for optimal ventilation and cooling. This innovative technology not only enhances comfort during physical activity but also promotes better performance by regulating body temperature.

The design process involved studying the mechanical properties of Natto cells and their reaction to changes in body temperature and humidity. In collaboration with New Balance, the team also analyzed human heat and sweat maps to create a garment that responds symbiotically to the wearer's needs.

Upscaling from a micro-scale structure to a wearable garment was a significant challenge for the bioLogic team. However, their dedication and scientific expertise allowed them to overcome this obstacle and create a truly groundbreaking product.

The self-transforming biological skin made its debut in a live ballet performance, showcasing its unique capabilities. The garment's ability to react to the dancer's movements and perspiration added an extra layer of dynamism and artistry to the performance.

This innovative design has received numerous accolades, including the prestigious A' Design Award in 2016. The bioLogic team's creation was recognized for its outstanding expertise, innovation, and remarkable level of excellence. It introduces a new era of sportswear that combines cutting-edge technology with functional design.

The future of sportswear lies in the seamless integration of biology and engineering. The self-transforming biological skin represents a harmonious perspective, where natural and synthetic elements work together to enhance human performance and comfort. With its ability to adapt and respond to the wearer's needs, this revolutionary garment is set to redefine the boundaries of sportswear.
