VisioFocus: The Evolution of Non-Contact Thermometers

Revolutionizing Temperature Measurement with Innovation and Hygiene

In the 90’s, tympanic thermometers were the most advanced thermometers on the market. However, they were not user-friendly, caused discomfort to patients, and required expensive hygienic covers. In response to these issues, Tecnimed Srl designed Thermofocus, the first thermometer capable of taking temperature at a distance on the forehead using an optical system. This breakthrough technology indicated the correct distance for measurement, ensuring accurate results. Building on the success of Thermofocus, Tecnimed Srl introduced VisioFocus, the next generation non-contact thermometer that not only measures body temperature without any contact with the skin but also projects the temperature directly onto the patient's forehead or any other surface.

VisioFocus sets itself apart with its unique features and strengths. The projection system, which is absolutely safe and does not use lasers, not only indicates the correct distance for measurement but also the specific area from which the temperature is being taken. This makes it easy for users to position the thermometer accurately and obtain precise readings. Additionally, VisioFocus can also measure the temperature of objects, making it a versatile tool for various applications.

The realization of the projection system was a complex task. Tecnimed Srl had to develop a small and "negative" LCD display that would allow the light of a low-consumption LED to be aimed accurately. The lenses used in the system had to enlarge the digits of the display and project them clearly onto a surface placed at the device's working distance. These lenses had to ensure a focused projection without any aberrations in the image.

VisioFocus has been designed with meticulous attention to detail. Its dimensions of 144 x 43.5 x 21.5 mm (5.67 x 1.71 x 0.85 inches) make it compact and easy to handle. The thermometer weighs 98 grams (3.46 ounces) including the cap, ensuring portability and convenience for users.

Functionally, VisioFocus captures the infrared radiation emitted by both living beings and objects. This radiation is detected by the thermopile sensor inside the thermometer, which then amplifies and processes the signal to provide an accurate temperature reading. To account for the influence of room temperature on forehead temperature, VisioFocus adjusts the readings to provide a comparable temperature to other body sites.

The project for VisioFocus began in 2012 and was managed directly by Tecnimed Srl in Varese, Italy. External suppliers were involved in the development of certain components, such as the shape design by an agency in Rome, the PCB design by a laboratory in Como, and the lens design by an optical engineering firm in Rome. The collaboration with these experts ensured the realization of a high-quality and technologically advanced product.

Tecnimed Srl conducted extensive research to ensure the accuracy and reliability of VisioFocus. Thousands of measurements were taken on individuals at various room temperatures ranging from 16 to 40°C. This research allowed the team to establish precise correlations between forehead temperature and other body sites, enabling the software to make appropriate adjustments in different environmental conditions.

Developing VisioFocus was not without its challenges. Tecnimed Srl introduced non-contact forehead measurement technology shortly after a major multinational company launched a tympanic thermometer with significant advertising investment. Despite attempts by other companies to replicate their technology, Tecnimed Srl successfully defended their exclusive device thanks to several patents protecting various aspects of their innovation.

VisioFocus has garnered recognition for its exceptional design and functionality. In 2016, it was awarded the Silver A' Design Award in the Medical Devices and Medical Equipment Design category. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill. VisioFocus exemplifies excellence in both technical characteristics and aesthetic appeal, leaving users amazed and inspired.

VisioFocus is not only a remarkable technological achievement but also a practical tool for both families and professionals. Its hygienic and non-contact measurement method makes it ideal for various applications, including screening individuals in airports during pandemic situations. With its ability to project temperature readings, VisioFocus brings convenience, accuracy, and innovation to temperature measurement.
