Flwr Shpr: The Innovative 3D-Printed Vase

Revolutionizing Flower Arrangements with Clay and Technology

Flwr Shpr, designed by Dave Coomans & Gaudi Hoedaya, combines the beauty of ceramics with the precision of 3D printing to create a series of unique and sustainable vases.

Flowers have always been a symbol of beauty and elegance, and now, with the Flwr Shpr vase, they have found a perfect match. This innovative design takes advantage of the versatility of clay and the possibilities offered by 3D printing technology to create vases that are not only visually stunning but also functional and sustainable.

The inspiration behind Flwr Shpr came from the designers' love for ceramics and their desire to experiment with new technologies. By combining the simplicity of clay with the precision of 3D printing, Coomans and Hoedaya were able to create shapes and textures that would be difficult or even impossible to achieve using traditional methods.

The Flwr Shpr vase consists of a base and interchangeable extensions, each with its own unique shape and texture. The base has a diameter of 10 cm and a height of 18 cm, while the extensions vary in diameter from 10 cm to 18 cm and have a height of 15 cm. This modular design allows users to create their own customized flower arrangements by choosing the base and extensions that best suit their preferences.

To bring their vision to life, Coomans and Hoedaya built their own 3D clay printer. The machine uses clay directly from the packaging, eliminating the need for water-diluted clay. The clay is pushed through a nozzle by a stepper motor, and a self-built heated nozzle warms the clay up to 70 degrees, allowing for more dramatic angles and shapes. After printing, the clay is fired in a kiln to transform it into a durable, waterproof material.

The Flwr Shpr vase was designed and made in Rotterdam, The Netherlands, and is the result of extensive research and experimentation. The designers faced challenges in finding the right balance between material, technique, and design, but ultimately created a product that is both visually striking and environmentally friendly.

Flwr Shpr has received recognition for its innovative design, winning the Silver A' Design Award in the 3D Printed Forms and Products category in 2016. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, innovation, and artistic skill, and Flwr Shpr certainly meets these criteria.

With its combination of clay, 3D printing, and modular design, Flwr Shpr is revolutionizing the way we think about flower arrangements. It offers a new level of customization and creativity, allowing users to create unique and personalized displays that reflect their own style and taste. So why settle for ordinary vases when you can have a Flwr Shpr?
