Eclipse Set of Nesting Noodle Bowls: A Blend of Function and Aesthetics

Lucie Piedra and Meg Oliver's Innovative Design Wins Silver A' Design Award

Lucie Piedra and Meg Oliver have transformed the humble noodle bowl into a work of art. Their Eclipse Set of Nesting Noodle Bowls, which won the Silver A' Design Award, combines functionality with aesthetics, creating a unique dining experience.

The inspiration for the Eclipse noodle bowl set came from the designers' desire to create the perfect noodle bowl. They wanted a design that would fit into their aesthetic, which often involves playing with functional forms composed of sphere, hemisphere, and circle combinations. The result was a set of bowls that are not only practical but also visually stunning.

What sets the Eclipse noodle bowl set apart is its unique design features. Each bowl is double-walled, allowing users to hold and carry a bowl full of steaming broth without burning their hands. The offset rim of the bowl has a thin, sipping edge, enabling users to savor every drop of broth. When not in use, the bowls nest within each other, creating a display piece reminiscent of the bands of light during a total eclipse.

The bowls were made using a 3-piece plaster mold, which was created from the original designs made on a potter's wheel. The final pieces are slip-cast porcelain, a testament to the designers' craftsmanship. The set includes three different sizes, each with its own purpose. The larger two bowls are perfect for adult eaters with different appetites, while the smallest bowl is ideal for toppings or for a small child.

The creation of the Eclipse noodle bowl set was not without its challenges. The designers had to overcome the physical obstacle of getting the bowls to nest as they wanted. Clay shrinks, and the large bowl shrank proportionally more than the small bowl. It took some back and forth until the bowls were correctly spaced within each other and their rims were lined up on a horizontal plane.

The Eclipse noodle bowl set is a testament to the designers' ability to transform a simple object into a work of art. It is no surprise that it was awarded Silver in the A' Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware and Cookware Design Award in 2017. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. Lucie Piedra and Meg Oliver's design certainly fits this description.
