Step: A Multifunctional Gradient Desk

An Innovative Design by Jannat Vasi Lokhandwala

An apt manifestation of its name, Step is inspired by a series of one point perspective sketches. Inferences illustrate the depth created on a surface with mere lines and angles. When colouring 3D objects on a 2D surface, the objects closest to the vanishing point are shaded darker. Another study recognizes that having the outer shell in a light colour almost always gives an appearance of weightlessness. Although the mass is constant, the gradient makes it lighter than a solid unit.

The Step desk, designed by Jannat Vasi Lokhandwala, is a unique and innovative piece of furniture that combines functionality with visual depth. The design is a solution to create an enhanced visual depth within the boundaries of a standalone object. This unit is available in two designs, giving users the option to meet their aesthetic requirements with concealed atypical storage if needed. The resultant appearance of this table is light due to the design composition, and the user can alter the proportions to meet the interior design constraints. This concept can translate into a collection from a table to a bench, console, chair, or unit.

The Step desk is not only visually appealing but also highly functional. It provides ample storage space along with comfort for the user while seated. When not used as a work desk, it can be placed against a feature wall with an art frame hanging above, serving as a sculptural console. It can also work as a divider to distinguish two areas in the same space, as the front and back sides of the table are the same. The design imprints on onlookers and instantly spruces up a space by becoming a focal element.

The design process for the Step desk involved meticulous attention to detail. It started with the requirement for a study table in a residential villa project. The dimensions available on site and the concept of the room were taken into consideration, along with the gradient transition floor tiles from Mirage Italy. Various designs were sketched out, and from a sketch to a 3D drawing to a scaled model, it was a detailed process. Renders were made to check the continuing pieces of wood and intersecting angles, resulting in a final 2D construction drawing. The design with details was then given for execution on site to the contractor team.

The Step desk is made using high-quality materials. It features a 50mm X 63.5mm Burma teak cross-section and 19mm marine ply storage. The finish is done with paint and a high gloss color lamination coat. The design incorporates five gradient shades: RAL9003, RAL7047, RAL7042, RAL7011, and RAL9005.

This award-winning design has garnered recognition in the industry. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in 2017. This award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The Step desk is respected for integrating industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, providing fulfillment and positive feelings, and contributing to a better world.

The Step desk is a testament to the creativity and ingenuity of Jannat Vasi Lokhandwala. Its unique design and multifunctionality make it a standout piece in any interior space.
