Ming-Der Girls' Senior High School: A Landscape Planning Masterpiece

Chao-Hsiang Chen and Yi-Hsin Liu's Award-Winning Design

In the heart of Taichung City, Taiwan, the Ming-Der Girls' Senior High School stands as a testament to the harmonious blend of architecture and landscape planning. Designed by Chao-Hsiang Chen and Yi-Hsin Liu, the campus is a modern interpretation of the "garden of Ming dynasty," offering a serene and scholarly environment for students.

The design was inspired by the concept of endless scenery, achieved through the juxtaposition of two arches. The path, lined with gray granophyre rails that double as seating, enhances the connection between the garden's beauty and the everyday life of the campus. This practical design element sets the project apart, making it a unique landscape planning endeavor.

One of the standout features of the design is the dual-pavilions located in a campus corner, enveloped by a green fence and a large tree. This natural barrier shields the school from the bustling street outside and obscures the view of towering buildings, creating a tranquil oasis within the city. The use of gray granophyre and red bricks in the construction of the garden adds to the graceful configuration, embodying the academic atmosphere of the scholar garden.

The design realization technology employed by Chao-Hsiang Chen and Yi-Hsin Liu is a blend of historical and contemporary styles. The corridor, sprinkled with pavilions, offers varying views as teachers and students move between buildings. The Chinese-style rails along the paths provide moments of leisure and a poetic atmosphere, enhancing the overall aesthetic of the campus.

Spanning 34,793 square meters, the landscape design is a testament to meticulous planning and execution. The fountain, adorned with stones and surrounded by trees and aquatic plants, offers a calming presence, easing the minds of students. The lush scenery provides a delightful view at every turn, making the learning experience enjoyable.

The design project, completed in Taichung City, Taiwan, faced several challenges. The designers aimed to create varying views with every step, a concept that required careful planning and execution. Despite these challenges, the end result is a beautiful landscape that offers a serene and conducive learning environment for students.

The Ming-Der Girls' Senior High School landscape design was awarded Silver in the A' Landscape Planning and Garden Design Award in 2017. This prestigious award is given to designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise, creativity, and innovation. Chao-Hsiang Chen and Yi-Hsin Liu's design, admired for its strong technical characteristics and artistic skill, certainly fits the bill, introducing positive feelings, amazement, and wonder to all who visit.
