SUVAR: A Testament to Traditional Chinese Craftsmanship

Handcrafted chair by Mingbin Yang marries modern design with ancient techniques

In an era where mass production often trumps individual craftsmanship, Mingbin Yang's chair, SUVAR, stands as a beacon of traditional Chinese artistry. Inspired by the Chinese expression "one rafter, one tile", this handcrafted chair pays homage to the traditional way of Chinese etiquette and brings it into the modern Eastern lifestyle.

Mingbin Yang's design is a testament to the beauty of simplicity. The chair's aesthetic is summed up in one curve and one slanting line, embodying the minimalist artistry that is often associated with Eastern design. The chair's literary style is a nod to the rich cultural heritage of China, while its modern design makes it a perfect fit for contemporary homes.

What sets SUVAR apart from other chairs is its unique construction. The chair adopts the mortice and tenon structure, a traditional woodworking technique that has been used for thousands of years in Chinese architecture. With 32 mortices and tenons at 12 different angles, the chair's construction is a complex feat that cannot be achieved through industrialised production. Each chair must be handcrafted, with each mortice and tenon carefully carved, assembled, trimmed, and polished by hand.

The chair's dimensions, (H)720mmX(D)535mmX(W)615mm, make it a versatile piece that can fit into any space. The separation of the seat and frame also allows for the diversification of seating material, adding another layer of customization to the design. The hand-resting and the legs all involve revolving, a testament to the designer's attention to detail and commitment to creating a chair that is not only beautiful but also functional.

The project, which started in December 2014 in China and finished in February 2017, was a labor of love for Mingbin Yang and his design team, HONIDEA. Despite the challenges of using a traditional construction technique that makes industrialised production impossible, the team persevered and created a chair that is a testament to their skill and dedication to their craft.

SUVAR's unique design and exceptional craftsmanship have not gone unnoticed. The chair was awarded the prestigious Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2017, a recognition given to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom. As Mingbin Yang continues to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship, we can only expect more innovative and inspiring creations from this talented designer.
