Assaggio Cutlery Set: Redefining the Cheese Tasting Experience

Unleashing the Power of Design in Flavor Perception

Innovation in tools for food is a challenging task, as the shapes of such objects have remained unchanged for ages. However, Federica Di Pietro, the brilliant mind behind the Assaggio Cutlery Set, has successfully broken the mold. Inspired by the cuts of flints used by primitive men, this cutlery set for cheese tasting aims to revolutionize the way we experience flavor.

Di Pietro's design philosophy revolves around the idea that the context in which a meal is consumed has a profound influence on its taste. By creating eating tools that communicate and excite the user, the Assaggio Cutlery Set takes the concept of flavor perception to new heights.

What sets this cutlery set apart from others is its unwavering focus on the user's experience. Each blade in the set is carefully crafted to require the user's attention and engagement. The tasting path designed by Di Pietro leads to an increasing and complete perception of the same flavor. In fact, tasting the same cheese with different tools will alter the intensity of the flavor, as demonstrated by studies conducted by C. Spence, a renowned psychologist.

The Assaggio Cutlery Set consists of six blades: three for serving and three for tasting. The serving knives meet the cutting requirements for the most common cheeses, and each blade serves a double function, developed by observing the actions typically performed with different types of cheese paste. The tasting cutlery, on the other hand, has been meticulously designed to showcase the influence of object shape on flavor perception.

Di Pietro's attention to detail extends to the materials used in the production of the Assaggio Cutlery Set. The blades are made from cut high carbon steel sheet, while the handles are crafted from wengè wood. This combination of materials not only ensures durability but also adds a touch of elegance to the set.

Since its inception in November 2015, the Assaggio Cutlery Set has garnered attention and recognition for its innovative approach to food design. It was exhibited during the Catanzaro Design Week in September 2016, captivating the audience with its unique concept and impeccable craftsmanship.

Di Pietro's research on the role of the senses in flavor perception has laid the foundation for this groundbreaking design. By creating objects that capture the user's attention and highlighting the importance of the context in which a meal is consumed, the Assaggio Cutlery Set aims to redefine the act of eating. It challenges the notion of meal multi-tasking and encourages individuals to savor and appreciate their food.

The Assaggio Cutlery Set, with its thought-provoking design and meticulous attention to detail, has earned Federica Di Pietro the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Food, Beverage, and Culinary Arts category in 2017. This recognition is a testament to the design's outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and contribution to improving the quality of life.
