At the heart of Zhan's design is the concept of inheritance. The villa is not just a structure; it is a legacy that a father wishes to pass on to his son and future generations. This central theme is reflected in the design's unique features, such as the windows between each staircase, which not only facilitate communication and interaction among family members but also allow for efficient energy utilization.
The villa's design takes full advantage of its location's congenital conditions. Sliding windows on each staircase allow light and wind to permeate the house, contributing to energy conservation. The vertical flow of the four-story structure is facilitated by iron stairs connecting each floor, creating a sense of unity and continuity.
Zhan stands out for its distinct aesthetic appeal. The exterior of the building features different shades of gray, enhancing the building's overall appearance. The building's structure, composed of various combinations of L shapes, adds to its visual interest. The interior design, on the other hand, is a blend of concrete, metal, marble, tile, glass, wood, decorative paint, and laminate flooring, offering a rich and diverse visual experience.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was cost control, given the client's budget limitations. Despite this, the team managed to deliver a high-quality design that met all the requirements. The construction process also posed challenges, as the team had to ensure that the construction met their design standards and quality. This required modifications and repairs after the construction was completed.
Shu-Ching Tan's Zhan is not just a residential villa; it is a design masterpiece that embodies the concept of inheritance. It is a testament to the designer's creativity, technical expertise, and commitment to quality. This is reflected in the prestigious Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award that the design received in 2017. The award is a recognition of the design's outstanding technical characteristics, artistic skill, and level of excellence.
