Balance: A Minimalist Coffee Table that Defies Gravity

A Unique Design by Mehmet Lutfi Hidayetoglu

The Balance coffee table, designed by Mehmet Lutfi Hidayetoglu, takes inspiration from tangram parts to create a visually unstable yet structurally balanced piece. With its innovative installation method and minimalist design, Balance challenges traditional furniture joining techniques and offers a dynamic and modern approach to interior design.

Balance is a coffee table that defies expectations. At first sight, its asymmetric structure appears unstable, but in reality, it is as stable as any furniture standing on three feet. What sets Balance apart is its installation process, which requires no expertise or tools. The coffee table is made up of three interlocking boards that can easily be assembled by the end user.

Unlike traditional furniture that relies on screws, nippers, or minifix for installation, Balance incorporates a simple yet effective interlocking system. The feet of the table are pinched together using dowels, and then the plates are added to secure the table. This innovative approach not only eliminates the need for specialized tools but also allows end users to actively participate in the design process.

Balance is made using CNC woodworking machines, with the main parts processed from Compact Laminate for thin sections and moisture resistance. Alternatively, MDF or solid boards can be used for cost-effective solutions. The use of recyclable boards also presents environmental benefits, aligning with the growing demand for sustainable design.

One of the key advantages of Balance is its packaging and transportation. The coffee table is delivered unassembled in a flat box, measuring approximately 50 x 50 x 5 cm. With a weight of 2.5 kg, it adheres to international transport standards. The layout in the box allows for easy stacking, eliminating any stacking limit. Manufacturers and sellers can now offer the table without reflecting additional costs to the users, making it an attractive option for both businesses and consumers.

Balance was projected in 2016 in Turkey, and the design registration process is currently underway. Prototypes were created in November of the same year in Konya, Turkey. The aim of the project was to create a furniture piece that can be assembled and disassembled multiple times without the need for tools, providing flexibility and personalization. By eliminating the need for expertise during installation, Balance offers a dynamic design solution that caters to the evolving needs of modern living spaces.

The Balance coffee table has received recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that demonstrate outstanding creativity, technical skill, and resourcefulness. Balance's incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology contributes to quality of life improvements, making it a valuable addition to any interior space.
