An exceptional project, the Inhabited Island, designed by Vadim Kondrashev and his team, is set to transform Saint Petersburg's cityscape. This city masterplan aims to create a sub-center that undertakes cultural, social, and touristic functions, while also relieving the pressure on the city's historic center.
What sets the Inhabited Island apart is its focus on creating a new cultural virtual space that harmoniously coexists with reality. The design takes into account the social environment of the future, ensuring that it aligns with the needs and preferences of the residents.
The realization of the Inhabited Island masterplan involved the use of advanced technology and design tools. The entire project was meticulously crafted using photo manipulations on Photoshop, AutoCAD, SketchUp, and 3ds Max.
The technical specifications of the design are impressive. Out of the total area of 150 hectares, 800,000 square meters are dedicated to commercial and office property development, while 430,000 square meters are allocated for residential facilities. Additionally, cultural, administrative, sports, and judicial facilities will cover an area of 300,000 square meters. The remaining 50 hectares are reserved for recreational facilities and landscaping. Once completed, this quarter will be able to accommodate up to 70,000 people per day from the nearest two subway stations and up to 50,000 people per day from other means of public transport.
The Inhabited Island project is not just about physical structures; it is a comprehensive development plan that integrates innovative city-planning, architectural, ecological, technological, and social practices. The design places a strong emphasis on incorporating green spaces, with at least one-third of the total territory dedicated to natural landscapes.
The Inhabited Island project was conceived and executed in St. Petersburg, with the design team led by architect Vadim Kondrashev. The team, which included Yury Anikin, Darya Pushkaryova, Valentina Dolganova, Yekaterina Panasenko, Yekaterina Glushenko, Tatiana Kryshina, and urbanist Karen Medvedev, worked tirelessly to overcome creative, technical, and research challenges to bring this vision to life.
The Inhabited Island project is a testament to the team's dedication to preserving the spirit of Saint Petersburg while embracing the possibilities of the future. It offers a glimpse into what the city could become in the next ten or twenty years, combining historical preservation with contemporary technologies and communications.
With its innovative approach and forward-thinking design, the Inhabited Island project has garnered recognition and accolades. In 2017, it was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the City Planning and Urban Design category. This prestigious award recognizes designs that are well-designed, practical, and innovative, meeting professional and industrial requirements.
The Inhabited Island project is a testament to the power of design to shape the future of cities, creating spaces that are not only functional but also enriching and inspiring.
