Faebrew Cafe: A Flight of Minimalistic Design

Pauline Lin's Award-Winning Design Inspired by Nature and Flight

Pauline Lin's Faebrew Cafe, an award-winning design project, is a unique blend of nature, minimalism, and flight. The cafe's design, inspired by the concept of a plane's wings, offers a fresh interpretation of minimalistic style, with reclaimed wood and felt defining the decor. The project, which started in May 2016 and finished in August 2016, is located in Richmond, BC, Canada.

Lin's inspiration for the Faebrew Cafe came from nature and minimalism, with the aim of making the cafe look interesting and less monotonous. The name 'Fae' in Faebrew signifies flight, and this theme is reflected in the design of the wall panelling, which resembles a plane's wings. The simple style of the space aligns with the cafe's business model of Craft Coffee, Bar Style.

What sets Faebrew Cafe apart is its combination of simple elements and fine craftsmanship. The design is a reinterpretation of the minimalist look, with natural materials such as reclaimed wood and felt defining the decor. The feature wall, in particular, showcases individual geometric panels that connect together to form a giant plane, placed onto LED backlights.

The cafe's interior space is approximately 63 square meters with a 6-meter high ceiling. The design tags associated with the project include Cafe, Felt, Wall Panel, Nature, LED light, Minimalistic, Monotone, Craftsmanship, Retail Shop, and Bar Counter.

One of the major challenges faced during the design process was the felt panelling for the feature wall. The team had to source a good supplier for the material and find a millwork company willing to take on the challenge of new ideas within a limited budget. The original design had to be compromised and changed to a smaller scale with a simpler shape due to cost-saving and other concerns. However, with productive decisions and teamwork, all problems were solved, and the result was amazing.

The Faebrew Cafe design was awarded Silver in A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2017. The award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. These designs, admired for their strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, showcase a remarkable level of excellence and introduce positive feelings, amazement, and wonder.
