Decaffeinator: A Sustainable Solution for Urban Waste

Reducing Waste and Supporting Plant Growth with Coffee Grounds

Every day, Americans throw away 900 million tablespoons of coffee grounds, which are a brilliant natural fertilizer. Instead of letting these coffee grounds sit in landfills where they may take years to reach the earth and decompose, Pearl Kraft & Katie McCann have created a product that reduces waste and helps sustain new plant life, while also saving water at the same time.

Decaffeinator is a simple solution to household urban waste by storing coffee waste and reusing it to sustain the growth of a new plant. This innovative planter has three layers, each specifically designed for its unique function. One layer holds water, a second holds coffee grounds, and a third holds the plant. Made of coffee-based filament, Decaffeinator further recycles coffee waste, making it a cradle-to-cradle solution to reduce environmental impact and support plant growth from the comfort of your home.

The 3D model for Decaffeinator was designed on Rhinoceros and printed partially on a Formbot T-Rex+ 3D Printer and partially on a Craftbot PLUS 3D Printer. The entire form is printed with coffee-based 3D printer filament, creating a visually appealing and sustainable product.

Measuring at an overall width of 241 mm, height of 421 mm, and depth of 241 mm, Decaffeinator is a compact and efficient way to repurpose coffee waste and nurture plant life.

Plant sits in the innermost, perforated layer of Decaffeinator. Coffee grounds are poured into the middle layer, which then infiltrate the soil through perforations in the inner module. Water is poured through the spout into the outermost module, where it sits until needed by the plant. Strings extend from the outer layer to the inner layer, wicking water to the plant as needed, ensuring optimal growth and minimal water waste.

The Decaffeinator project started in January 2017 in Toronto and was completed in February 2017. It was exhibited on The Social during fabrication, showcasing its innovative design and sustainable approach to waste management.

The most challenging part of this project was creating a form that would allow for the recycling of water and coffee grounds without compromising aesthetics. Pearl Kraft & Katie McCann successfully overcame this challenge, resulting in a visually pleasing and environmentally conscious product.

Decaffeinator is not only a functional planter but also a statement piece that encourages individuals to rethink their approach to waste management. By repurposing coffee grounds and reducing water waste, Decaffeinator provides a sustainable solution for urban households.

This design was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2017 for its outstanding creativity and resourcefulness. Recognized for incorporating best practices in art, science, design, and technology, Decaffeinator exemplifies strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
