Journey Bench: A Modular and Durable Seating Solution

Bringing Comfort and Style to Outdoor Spaces

Journey Bench is a multi-functional public seating design that combines modern aesthetics with the inspiration of natural log seats commonly found around campfires. Created by a team of talented designers including Jon, Sarah, Nora, Django, and Jack, this innovative bench offers a unique and versatile seating experience for outdoor environments.

Journey Bench stands out from other seating options with its modular design and durable materials. Made from bent steel and cedar wood, it provides a modern twist to the traditional log seat. The modular nature of the bench allows for easy social interaction or individual relaxation, making it perfect for parks, recreational areas, and other outdoor spaces.

One of the standout features of Journey Bench is the hole punched in the corner, which serves as a leash clip for users with animal companions. Additionally, the space underneath the bench provides a convenient storage area to keep personal items dry and within reach.

When it comes to the production process, Journey Bench is crafted from folded, 3.175mm sheet steel. The steel is welded along the seam formed by the folds, ensuring maximum stability. The bench is then powder coated and baked at a high temperature to create a durable, weather-resistant finish. The seat planks are held in place with screws from underneath the sheet steel, creating a seamless form that appears as a flat plank balanced upon a bent triangle.

With dimensions of 458mm wide, 445mm deep, and a total depth of 890mm, Journey Bench offers ample seating space. Its height of 450mm provides a comfortable sitting position for users of all ages.

Journey Bench falls under the categories of furniture, decorative items, and homeware design, as well as cultural and outdoor seating. Its simple yet functional design allows for easy deployment and operation. Users can quickly set up the bench in parks or other outdoor areas without any assembly required. The cedar wood seat remains comfortable in all weather conditions, while the powder coated steel ensures durability against the elements.

The development of Journey Bench took place during the T-Minus 151 design blitz at the Rochester Institute of Technology. The team collaborated with the Seneca Art and Culture Center at Ganondagan, a Native American community site in Upstate New York. The design incorporates elements inspired by the surrounding architectural and natural environment, representing a balance between modern and traditional elements.

Throughout the design process, the team faced challenges in maintaining stability while allowing for maximum flexibility and cost-effectiveness. By minimizing production steps and using low-cost yet durable materials, they successfully created a bench that combines strength, versatility, and affordability.

Journey Bench has been recognized for its excellence in design, receiving the Iron A' Design Award in the Street and City Furniture Design category in 2017. This prestigious award is given to well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. The bench's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contributes to a better world.

With its modular design, durable construction, and unique features, Journey Bench is a standout seating solution for outdoor spaces. Whether used individually or grouped together, it offers a comfortable and stylish seating experience that encourages social interaction and relaxation.
