Fjord: A Multifunctional Carafe Designed by Siddhant Agarwal

An Elegant Solution for Bars and Restaurants

Siddhant Agarwal has created Fjord, a water carafe designed specifically for contemporary bars and restaurants. With its integrated icebox and soft mood light, Fjord offers a unique and practical solution to the common problem of limited table space.

As a frequent visitor to open bars and restaurants, Agarwal noticed that the extra items like candles, jugs, and iceboxes often took up valuable space on tables. In crowded settings, these small items were often the first to be removed, losing their purpose. Agarwal's goal was to make these essential items available without sacrificing their identity, while also minimizing their footprint on tables.

Fjord's design addresses these challenges by incorporating an integrated ice compartment, eliminating the need for bulky ice boxes. The carafe also features a soft mood light at the end, removing the need for candles that occupy space on tables. The easy-to-tilt design allows for effortless pouring of water, with convenient access to ice. As the ice gradually melts, it adds to the water below, reducing wastage. This innovative design reduces customer dependency on servers and enhances the overall dining experience.

The multifunctional nature of Fjord goes beyond its practical features. The integrated ice compartment enables the fusion of wines and cocktails, allowing bartenders and mixologists to create unique and refreshing beverages. Fjord's design seamlessly blends into any environment, yet its distinctive form and function make it stand out.

Constructed with acrylic for the main body and plastic wood for the caps, Fjord is both aesthetically pleasing and durable. Its specifications include a length of 300mm, a maximum width of 100mm at the top, a minimum width of 70mm towards the bottom, and a water storage capacity of 1 litre. The icebox can store up to 20 ice cubes measuring 25mm on each side.

Agarwal's design process involved extensive research, including field visits, interviews with stakeholders, and surveys. By utilizing Ideo method cards, he employed techniques such as behavioral mapping, behavioral archaeology, and surveys to gather insights and understand user needs.

Creating Fjord presented its own set of challenges. Agarwal had to strike a balance between form and function, ensuring that the carafe's curve kept the disk in place without additional support. Production challenges arose when manufacturers proposed changes to the design for ease of production. However, Agarwal's perseverance led him to collaborate with an automobile parts supplier who guided him in convincing the manufacturers to maintain the original design.

Fjord has garnered recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Bakeware, Tableware, Drinkware, and Cookware Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Fjord's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better world.

Fjord is a testament to Siddhant Agarwal's creativity and dedication to solving real-world problems through design. With its multifunctional features and elegant design, Fjord offers a sophisticated solution for bars and restaurants, enhancing the dining experience for both customers and staff.
