v.az: A Poetic and Interactive Partition Screen

Designed by Andrea Macruz

Inspired by the patterns of leaf coloring found in Brazil, v.az is a unique partition screen that combines fluidity and movement to create a poetic and interactive furniture piece.

v.az, designed by Andrea Macruz, draws inspiration from the triangular patterns of leaf coloring, such as those found in the false shamrock and the calathea-louisae. The opposing triangular openings in the screen were created using a parametric program, which allowed for further exploration of shape and measurements.

What sets v.az apart is its ability to transmit a sense of fluidity. The soft openings and the idea of movement that they convey make this partition screen both visually captivating and interactive. When the shape of the screen is changed, the background revealed through the openings also changes, adding an element of surprise and dynamism to the design.

The realization of v.az involved the use of pinewood strips cut using a CNC machine. These strips were then connected by six steel cables, carefully distributed at different heights. The combination of wood and steel creates a visually striking contrast and adds to the overall aesthetic appeal of the design.

With dimensions of 2500mm W x 20mm D x 1750mm H, v.az is not only a visually stunning piece of furniture but also a practical one. It can be easily packed and unpacked, as it wraps completely, facilitating transport and storage.

The development of v.az was not without its challenges. One of the most difficult aspects was determining the placement of the steel cables, considering the extensive openings in the screen. Numerous tests were conducted to find the optimal location, size, and tensile forces for the cables.

Created using a combination of digital modeling and artisanal craftsmanship, v.az showcases the fusion of technology and traditional techniques. The use of a 3-D modeler program, Rhinoceros, and its parametric plug-in, Grasshopper, allowed for precise design and construction. The pinewood strips, cut using a CNC machine, constituted the digital part of the process, while the assembly and finishing were done by hand.

The v.az partition screen was completed in August 2016 in Sao Paulo, Brazil, and was exhibited at the MADE fair. Its unique design and innovative approach to furniture earned it the Bronze A' Design Award in the Furniture Design category in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes designs that demonstrate creativity, resourcefulness, and a commitment to improving quality of life.
