Camino's design style, known as Chigiri-e, involves creating artwork through torn colored paper collage. Unlike traditional collages, Camino's technique results in motifs with unique uneven lines, adding depth and texture to her creations. With Paper Trip, she has taken this technique to new heights, expressing the line structure and enhancing the collage Chigiri-e.
The process of bringing Paper Trip to life starts with the creation of the Chigiri-e design. Camino meticulously tears and arranges hand-colored paper to form the desired motifs, inspired by her travels. Each handkerchief depicts a different scene, such as an airplane, a luxury hotel, a hotel's poolside view, or a cozy cafe in a charming town. These motifs represent the relaxing and enjoyable moments we often experience during our trips.
Once the Chigiri-e design is complete, it is printed onto a beautiful satin fabric, giving the handkerchief a luxurious and glossy finish. The result is a pocket-sized work of art that can be used as a functional accessory or hung on a wall like a picture, serving as a constant reminder of cherished memories.
Measuring 480mm x 480mm or 480mm x 360mm, Paper Trip offers versatility in its usage. The end user can easily carry it in their pocket, ready to be used whenever needed. Alternatively, it can be displayed on a wall, adding a touch of artistic elegance to any space.
Camino's design challenges were minimal, as she seamlessly translated her Chigiri-e technique into a handkerchief design. The only obstacle she encountered was the need for ample space to accommodate the intricate details of the original artwork.
Paper Trip is a testament to Camino's artistic prowess and her ability to merge art, design, and functionality. It has garnered recognition in the design world, receiving the Bronze A' Design Award in the Graphics, Illustration, and Visual Communication Design category in 2018. This prestigious award is bestowed upon designs that exhibit outstanding creativity, resourcefulness, and technical skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
With Paper Trip, Natsuki Camino has created a truly unique and captivating piece that seamlessly blends art and travel. Whether used as a practical accessory or displayed as a work of art, Paper Trip is a testament to the beauty and creativity that can be found in everyday objects.
