Revolutionizing Helmet Design: IsoFit by Brad Maloney

Introducing the IsoFit Helmet System: A Balanced Approach to Safety and Comfort

Brad Maloney, a passionate innovator in helmet design, has revolutionized the helmet fitting experience with the creation of IsoFit, a custom helmet fit system. This article explores the unique properties, design process, and the potential impact of this award-winning design on the helmet industry.

Brad Maloney and his team at Helmet Comp, driven by their dissatisfaction with conventional ring-style helmet tensioner systems, have developed a unique solution - IsoFit. This innovative design is the first hemispherical micro-adjustment liner system that conforms to any head shape, providing a comfortable, custom fit. The IsoFit system has been tested in cycle, military, and hockey helmets, with a major bicycle helmet brand set to release IsoFit-equipped helmets in 2019.

The IsoFit system is not a one-size-fits-all solution. Instead, it is designed around specific OEM helmet designs. Helmet Comp offers design and engineering services to helmet brands, licenses IP for production releases, and provides sales, technical support, and customer service. This approach ensures that each IsoFit system is tailored to the helmet brand's design and sizes.

One of the key features of the IsoFit system is its ease of use. With just one turn of the dial, the helmet liner system conforms to any head shape. Unlike current ring-style tension systems that apply concentrated pressure points to the forehead and neck, IsoFit evenly distributes pressure around the entire head for a comfortable, form fit.

The development of the IsoFit system began in May 2015, and over 12 designs have been tested by Boa Technology, OEM helmet brands, and end users. A major breakthrough in design, function, and manufacturability was achieved in June 2017, leading to the formal product release to OEM helmet brands in November 2017.

Maloney's design was driven by research into the limitations of current helmet designs. Circumferential style tensioner systems only offer adjustments to the lower head area, leading to pressure points on the forehead and neck and causing the helmet to shift around on the head. Furthermore, OEM helmet brands typically design helmets around one specific head shape, ignoring the other nine documented head shapes. IsoFit addresses these issues by conforming to any head shape for a custom fit, with no concentrated pressure points.

Brad Maloney's IsoFit design was awarded Silver in the A' Safety Clothing and Personal Protective Equipment Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award recognizes top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that demonstrate outstanding expertise and innovation. IsoFit is poised to revolutionize the helmet industry by providing a superior fitting experience, making helmets more comfortable and safer for everyone.
