String Game of Light

A Lighting Installation Symbolizing Unity and Cooperation

Jing'an District and Zhabei District, located in the center of Shanghai, China, were merged into a new district in 2015. To commemorate this event, a unique lighting installation was created at the junction of the two districts. The installation, named "String Game of Light," is a symbol of unity and cooperation, inspired by the popular string game played in China.

The String Game of Light installation is a remarkable piece of art that redefines the landscape space over Hengfeng Road Bridge at night. It creates an illusion of strings connecting the top of road lighting poles, representing the commitment to collaboration between the two districts. The design team, led by Guojian Hu, aimed to highlight the importance of working together and the enjoyment that comes from cooperation.

The installation consists of three main components: the generator, the optical reflector, and the receiver. The generator, located at the base of each road lighting pole, produces two laser light beams that pass through a pipe fixed on the pole. The pipe is covered with tempered glass to ensure safety. Mirrors are used as optical reflectors to accurately redirect the lasers towards the receivers on the other poles. To minimize glare and light pollution, the receivers are designed as triangle-shaped boxes covered with black louvers. This careful design ensures that the beam directions are fixed and precise.

One of the challenges faced during the design process was finding a suitable location for the laser light generators. Initially, they were planned to be placed at the top of the poles, but concerns about size and weight arose. After extensive research, the design team came up with an innovative solution. They applied optical mirrors to change the direction of the lasers and moved the generators to the bottom of the poles. This solution not only addressed the technical concerns but also fulfilled the client's requirement of not occupying any additional space.

The String Game of Light installation stands at a height of 7000mm, creating a captivating visual experience for viewers. Its unique concept and meticulous execution make it a standout piece of art in the city of Shanghai.

Guojian Hu, along with Jinqi Ying, Xi Xu, and Jianquan Sang, formed the design team responsible for this remarkable installation. Their creativity and technical expertise resulted in a design that not only symbolizes unity and cooperation but also adds a touch of magic to the city's nightscape.

This design, created by Guojian Hu, holds the copyrights and is a winner of the prestigious Bronze A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2018. This award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
