Revolutionizing Compact Bathrooms: The R2300 Series by Toshihiko Sakai

Transforming Small Spaces with Innovative Design and Technology

Discover how Toshihiko Sakai's R2300 Series revolutionizes the design of compact bathrooms, merging functionality with a soft, relaxing atmosphere through innovative design and technology.

Japanese apartments are known for their compactness, with an average bathroom size of just four square meters. To address the challenge of fitting functional and aesthetically pleasing bathroom accessories into such a small space, designer Toshihiko Sakai created the R2300 Series. This collection of space-saving bathroom accessories is a testament to Sakai's innovative approach to design, combining form and function in a way that enhances the user's experience.

Sakai's inspiration for the R2300 Series came from the desire to create a relaxing atmosphere within the bathroom, despite its small size. The designer achieved this by dividing each surface of the products finely and adjusting irregularities in detail, resulting in a round form and smooth curve. This design choice is a departure from the typical square-shaped bathroom accessories, bringing a soft and calming ambiance to the space.

The uniqueness of the R2300 Series lies in its modern soft shape, a feature rarely seen in bathroom accessories. While most companies offer either classical or sharply modern designs, Sakai wondered why there were no designs that could bring a feeling of relaxation to the bathroom. The R2300 Series is his answer to that question, offering a product that not only fits perfectly into small spaces but also enhances the overall atmosphere of the bathroom.

Realizing this design was a technical challenge due to the space limitations of a typical Japanese bathroom. Round form designs tend to be larger than square shapes, but Sakai couldn't afford to make the accessories bigger. To overcome this, he used the latest CAD system, which allowed for adjustments in 0.1 mm increments for each part of the design. This meticulous approach resulted in a design that looks simple but is in fact divided into more than four surfaces, each polished to perfection with a new tool developed specifically for this product.

The R2300 Series includes a towel bar, towel ring, and toilet paper holder, all made of zinc die casting plated in chrome finish and polished stainless steel. The products are easily mounted to the wall using an electric drill, and the roll bar of the toilet paper holder can be adjusted in its direction at the sites in case the toilet is installed in an inappropriate position. This attention to detail and user-friendly design has drastically reduced installation time per item, making the R2300 Series a favorite among both installers and end users.

In recognition of its innovative design and functionality, the R2300 Series was awarded Silver in the A' Bathroom Furniture and Sanitary Ware Design Award in 2018. This prestigious award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation. The R2300 Series, with its strong technical characteristics and splendid artistic skill, certainly fits the bill.
