Xuzhou Suning Plaza: A Modern Marvel by Aedas

Merging Historical Inspiration with Contemporary Urban Life

The city of Xuzhou, known as an "Imperial Emperor’s Town", boasts a rich history spanning over 5,000 years. Aedas sought to connect this historical legacy with the modern urban lifestyle, drawing inspiration from the "Lucky Cloud" pattern, a motif produced in the late Zhou Dynasty and historically associated with Xuzhou. This pattern, symbolizing auspiciousness and inspiring reverie, serves as a metaphor for the dynamic and chaotic nature of urban life.

Located in Xuzhou's prosperous business district, the Xuzhou Suning Plaza is expected to play a significant role in the city's future development. The design features five towers of different orientations, all located over a circular podium, creating a symbol of the "Lucky Cloud" pattern. This unique arrangement ensures each tower enjoys ample sunlight, minimizes cross views, and offers stunning views of Xuzhou.

The realization of this design involved the use of curtain walls and aluminum panels, carefully calculated and controlled to reduce solar heating. Aedas also designed a bespoke integrated natural lighting and ventilation system for the project. The aluminum panels create rings around the building, giving it a sense of flowing motion.

Xuzhou Suning Plaza is a multi-use commercial complex with a total Gross Floor Area (GFA) of 481908.8㎡. The tallest tower, Tower A, stands at 266m and houses class A office spaces, Soho offices, and a 5-star hotel. The other four towers, each 105.7m high, host apartments and offices. The podium serves as a shopping mall that extends to B1 and links to the metro station.

The design of Xuzhou Suning Plaza faced numerous challenges, including the need for versatility in the combination of spaces and functions, and the desire to create a visual icon for the city. Despite these challenges, Aedas successfully delivered a design that enhances the city by offering a public plaza within, while also becoming a visual icon for the city.

This remarkable design has earned Aedas the prestigious Golden A' Architecture, Building and Structure Design Award in 2018. This award is granted to outstanding creations that reflect the designer's prodigy and wisdom, embodying extraordinary excellence and significantly impacting the world with their desirable characteristics.
