Bringing Traditional Chinese Gathering Spaces to a Modern Retail Environment

Hi Running takes its inspiration from the idea of a Banyan tree, which has long been rooted in Chinese culture as a symbol of community and togetherness. The designers at Atelier Global Ltd. sought to recreate this sense of gathering and socializing in a modern retail environment.

The centerpiece of Hi Running is a parametric atrium that mimics the shape of a giant tree. The atrium is covered by a skylight, allowing natural light to filter in and create a welcoming atmosphere. The branches of the tree extend throughout the arcade, leading visitors' gaze up towards the skylight and back down to the atrium where they can rest and meet friends.

One of the unique features of Hi Running is the use of stained steel panels to create an aged look reminiscent of old villages. The panels are randomly sprayed with stains, giving them a weathered appearance. This design choice adds a layer of coziness to the space, making visitors feel at home in the arcade.

The technical specifications of Hi Running include a curved perimeter for the skylight, which was achieved by assembling small cut triangles and glass. This meticulous attention to detail ensures a seamless and visually striking design.

Hi Running is not just a shopping destination; it is a community hub. The reception area is designed like a sitting room, complete with a large low table where guests can be welcomed with tea. The overall shopping experience is casual and cozy, with a focus on creating a less confined and less decorative space.

Hi Running was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2018 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design. This prestigious award recognizes designs that incorporate best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to improvements in quality of life.
