Lalaboom Educational Beads: A Stylish and Versatile Preschool Toy

Introducing Lalaboom: A Unique Approach to Preschool Play

While most baby products have a short life cycle, Fabien Fontaine, the designer behind Lalaboom Educational Beads, wanted to offer a versatile toy that could follow a child's development. Each bead in Lalaboom has an organic shape, vivid color, and specific texture, inspired by the diversity of nature. The aim was to create a solution to plastic waste by making a purposeful item that uses universal shapes and functions.

Lalaboom Educational Beads is not your ordinary preschool toy. It is the first stylish toy that follows a child's learning curve, intended for kids from 10 months up to 36 months and beyond. With five functions corresponding to different stages of a child's development, Lalaboom encourages essential skills through manipulation. Children can pop it, twist it, mix it, stack it, and lace it, discovering each function through hands-on play.

What sets Lalaboom apart is its endless possibilities for creativity and construction. With 10 colors, 11 textures, and 11 organic shapes, children can play in style and create an infinite number of combinations. Lalaboom also shares several principles with the Montessori teaching method, focusing on learning through experimentation, hand manipulation, and open play.

The realization of Lalaboom posed its own set of challenges. The designer had to create a toy that complied with safety standards, ensuring the right size, structures, and absence of small parts. The choice of material was crucial, and HDPE (High-Density Polyethylene) was selected for its softness, durability, and being PVC and BPA free.

Each bead in Lalaboom measures 4.5 cm in diameter and 8 cm in length, designed with chunky pieces calculated to fit children's hands comfortably. The toy concentrates several classic toy functions into a single product, offering essential play value such as connection, eye-hand coordination, motor skills stimulation, lacing function, and construction.

The Lalaboom project started in early 2017 in Hong Kong and was exhibited in October 2017. The official announcement took place during the Nuremberg toy fair in February 2018. Extensive research was conducted to bring Lalaboom to life, including quantitative and qualitative studies on the preschool toy market, product functions, and prices. Material and texture research was also undertaken in the preschool and nursery toy categories, involving shop visits, sample studies, and interviews with educational and toy professionals.

Lalaboom has received international recognition for its innovative design. It was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in the Baby, Kids, and Children's Products Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes designs that exhibit strong technical and creative skills, contributing to improvements in quality of life.

Lalaboom Educational Beads is not just a toy; it is a tool for early childhood development, combining style, versatility, and educational value. With its unique design and endless possibilities, Lalaboom is set to inspire and engage young minds around the world.
