Folded: A Harmonious Blend of Tradition and Modernism

The inspiration behind 'Folded' stems from the concept of a 'well-matched couple', where each part complements the other, and each material serves a specific function. The armchair gives the impression of a shell hugging the wooden structure, much like a person. This design approach is complete with the research of simplicity and minimizing the usual technical aspect, with no screws or fixed parts appearing. The only movement of the armrest around the wooden structure suggests that the shell hangs on the frame gently and smoothly.

What sets 'Folded' apart from other designs is its hybrid nature. The wooden frame gives a nod to home furniture while the modern shell fits offices, resulting in a product with a wide range of use. Produced with one cost-effective molding, 'Folded' can be assembled in a variety of ways and materials and could be completed by a wide range of seating. Future evolution of the range is possible with multiple options such as high and low stool, chairs.

The technical specifications of 'Folded' are H: 730 x L: 560 x D: 690. The armchair is easy to use and can be proposed in upholstery for better comfort. The project started in Paris in May 2017 and was completed in January 2018. The goal was to work on a compact, comfortable armchair, considering the market. The main difference is the structural system which allows an economic shell and structure according to their morphology and the interaction they have structurally.

The design process was not without its challenges. Wood and synthetic resin do not have the same tolerance finishes, and it was complex to achieve a balanced result with an interesting dialogue between the two parts. Expressing this aspect was the main challenge as the shapes are very simple and the technical constraints heavy. However, 'Folded' successfully overcame these challenges, resulting in a design that expresses tradition and modernism.

'Folded' is a patented design by Serge Atallah under INPI OMPI WIPO. This design was awarded Silver in A' Furniture Design Award in 2019, a testament to its top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable design that illustrates outstanding expertise and innovation.
