The Municipal Toy Library of Dólar is a testament to the creative genius of Carlos Quevedo Rojas. The building is designed in a single, functional, and open floor plan. The service area is located in the eastern part of the building, while the playroom, which opens up to the beautiful rural landscape, is situated in the western part. The design follows an organic tracing, with the main form creating an exterior space linked to the central core of games. The red and white linoleum flooring establishes the zoning of the program, adding to the overall aesthetic appeal of the nursery.
One of the unique features of this design is the fragmented flat cover, which follows a composite scheme. This design element introduces natural light and ventilation to the main core, enhancing the spatial quality of the nursery. The building's structure is a mix of steel and concrete, with termoarcilla for closings and coatings of lime, plaster, and linoleum. The facilities are basic, with exterior units concealed above the low roof.
The project was completed with a low budget of 450 €/m2, subsidized with funds of agrarian employment for unemployed people. Despite the budget constraints, the nursery stands out for its design and functionality. The building is located in the south perimeter of Dólar, a town in Guadix's region, and it opens up to the rural landscape at the foot of Sierra Nevada.
Carlos Quevedo Rojas worked with collaborators Miguel Rodríguez Muñoz and Donatella La Riccia on this project. The Municipal Toy Library of Dólar was constructed by the Ayuntamiento de Dólar, under the Program of Promotion Agrarian Employment. The project was designed in 2016 and constructed in 2017.
The Municipal Toy Library of Dólar is a shining example of how design can be both functional and aesthetically pleasing. The nursery, with its unique design and low budget, has set a benchmark in the field of architecture. It is no surprise that this project was awarded the Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019, a testament to the outstanding expertise and innovation of Carlos Quevedo Rojas.
