Wiivv's journey began with the launch of their 3D printed insoles in 2016. The positive feedback from customers, many of whom expressed a desire for similar comfort in their sandals, led to the development of these custom fit sandals. The team at Wiivv combined their expertise in biomechanics, manufacturing, and design to create a product that broke the dichotomy between comfort and style typically seen in the footwear market.
The unique properties of Wiivv's sandals lie in the use of a smartphone app with an award-winning user experience. This app captures the user's data and generates a biomechanically optimized design. The sandal is then 3D printed and shipped to the customer within 14 days. The custom fit, comfort, and no-rub toe thong construction make it one of the most comfortable sandals on the market.
Wiivv's sandals are not just about comfort. They also represent a significant technological achievement. The product was realized by combining 3D printing with conventional manufacturing techniques. The design process was human-centric, using over 5 million human data points, including customer trials, surveys, feedback, clinical trials, and biometric data.
Despite the technological sophistication, Wiivv's sandals are priced under $130. This was achieved by adopting a modular approach, which allowed aesthetic customization, reduced duties, and end-of-life recycling. The product weighs between 388-684g, depending on the size of the customer's foot, and fits foot lengths between 235-315mm.
The Wiivv team faced numerous challenges during the design process. The biggest hurdle was ensuring biomechanical thoroughness. Initial designs were scrapped when clinical trial results indicated they were not best in class. The final design, however, achieved best in class biomechanics results.
Wiivv's custom fit sandals represent a significant step forward in the footwear industry. They combine technology, design, and comfort in a way that has never been seen before. The sandals have been recognized for their innovation, winning the Golden A' Footwear, Shoes, and Boots Design Award in 2019.
