Inspired by her travels to countries with warmer climates, Kulper noticed the absence of rugs in rooms with stone floors. She envisioned a rug that could provide warmth and comfort during colder seasons, even in these countries. Thus, the Astron Shape Shifting Rug was born, along with a bench to store the rug pieces when not in use, adding another layer of functionality to the design.
The Astron Shape Shifting Rug is not just a rug; it's a design solution. Specifically designed for countries with warm summers, this rug is only desired in the colder seasons like autumn and winter. The accompanying bench has a lid where the rug pieces can be stored when not in use. The user can also form different designs depending on how the rug pieces are placed next to each other, allowing for a personalized touch.
Hand tufted from New Zealand wool, the rug tiles are made with an attached anti-slip material to ensure each tile stays in place. The iron bench, with a wheelbarrow function and storage under the seat, is a testament to Kulper's attention to detail and functionality. The rug tiles are easy to place in different formations, allowing the rug owner to explore different designs according to the occasion.
The Astron Shape Shifting Rug project started in Sweden in September 2018 and was completed in February 2019. The research for this design focused on creating a rug that is easy to store for customers who do not need a rug during the hot summer season. The bench also has a wheelbarrow function, is made of steel, and has storage under the removable seat. These rug tiles are very suitable also for entrances and lobbies as the tile are easy to replace when cleaning is needed.
This design was awarded the Golden A' Furniture Design Award in 2019.
