Epicenter Lite: A Sophisticated Seismic Alert Device

Creating a Visual and Acoustic Interface for Earthquake Warnings

Skyalert's Epicenter Lite is a physical system of seismic alert designed by Alfredo Mendez and Joshua Jimenez. This innovative device aims to provide sophisticated and efficient earthquake warnings for companies, offices, schools, factories, and restaurants.

The inspiration behind Epicenter Lite is to create a visual reference to the propagation of seismic waves. By establishing an attention point in the space, people can easily locate the device and be aware of its presence as a seismic alert device.

Skyalert, a Mexican company dedicated to warning the population about earthquakes, developed the Red Skyalert sensor system. This system can detect seismic activity, including its intensity and geographical location. By integrating this sensor system with Epicenter Lite, users can receive alerts through the platform's mobile app and a physical alarm up to 120 seconds before the seismic impact at their location.

Epicenter Lite stands out with its unique properties and strengths. The device features a single steel frame with multiple sections that contain all the electronics. This design allows for hardware upgrades without changing the device's form, providing flexibility and future-proofing. The enclosure is made of plastic pieces, ensuring durability and protection for the internal components.

Measuring at 305 mm in width, 130 mm in depth, and 175 mm in height, Epicenter Lite is compact and can be easily integrated into various spaces. Its sleek design and sturdy construction make it a visually appealing and reliable interface for the earthquake warning system.

The device operates through a WiFi connection, enabling it to receive alerts from the Red Skyalert sensor system. This seamless integration ensures timely and accurate warnings, giving users valuable time to take necessary precautions.

The development of Epicenter Lite started in January 2018 in Mexico and was completed in October 2018. Throughout the project, the design team focused not only on aesthetics but also on the integration of engineering principles to create a cohesive and functional device. The internal modular frame allows for easy customization and hardware upgrades without compromising the device's external appearance.

Epicenter Lite's design presented several challenges, including creating a modular frame for hardware upgrades and developing a visual identity that showcases the high engineering standards of the Skyalert team. Through innovative solutions and meticulous design, these challenges were overcome, resulting in a device that combines functionality, aesthetics, and reliability.

Recognized for its excellence, Epicenter Lite was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Security, Safety, and Surveillance Products Design category in 2019. This prestigious award acknowledges well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. Epicenter Lite's integration of industry best practices and competent technical characteristics contribute to a better and safer world.

Epicenter Lite is not just a seismic alert device; it is a testament to the dedication and ingenuity of the design team at Skyalert. By seamlessly blending art, architecture, design, innovation, and technology, they have created a device that not only warns but also inspires confidence in the face of seismic events.
