HALF: Redesigning Ice Cream Packaging for Clean and Convenient Enjoyment

An Innovative Solution to Prevent Melting and Mess

Ice cream often melts before we finish eating it, and makes our hands dirty very quickly. But there's nothing we can do to stop it before.

When summer arrives, ice cream becomes a popular treat, but it also presents a challenge - it melts quickly, leaving us with sticky hands and a messy experience. However, designer Liu Yi has come up with a brilliant solution to this age-old problem with the innovative design of HALF ice cream packaging.

HALF ice cream packaging revolutionizes the way we enjoy this frozen delight. By changing the way the packaging opens, it leaves half of the container in our hand as a protective cover to catch the melted liquid. This ingenious design not only prevents the ice cream from dripping onto our hands but also allows us to enjoy it without any mess.

One of the key strengths of HALF ice cream packaging is its use of resources in the product system. Made from food-grade thickened BOPP material, the packaging is not only safe for consumption but also durable enough to withstand the melting process. Its unique properties make it an ideal solution for hot summer days when ice cream tends to melt rapidly.

The tear-off feature of the packaging allows for easy access to the ice cream. Simply tear along the dotted line to open the bag. Then, hold the bottom bag in your hand, and the gap opens to form a protective cover. This intuitive interaction ensures a seamless and hassle-free experience.

The design team, led by Liu Yi, includes talented individuals such as Hu Miaodi, Li Yuanmo, Yang Pei, Wang Jun, Che Yinan, Ji Jiahui, Wang Yutong, Liu Chuanman, Wang Pengfei, Liu Shibo, and Ma Hongfei. Together, they have brought this innovative concept to life, addressing a common problem faced by ice cream lovers worldwide.

The development of HALF ice cream packaging began in June 2018 in Hebei and was completed in August 2018. Throughout the project, extensive research was conducted, focusing on observing everyday life and identifying areas for improvement. The result is a design that seamlessly integrates functionality and aesthetics.

The outstanding innovation and practicality of HALF ice cream packaging have been recognized with the prestigious A' Design Award. In 2019, it was awarded the Iron A' Packaging Design Award, which honors well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements. This accolade highlights the design's ability to integrate industry best practices and competent technical characteristics, ultimately contributing to a better world.
