Four Quarters: A Multifunctional Coffee Table

A Versatile Piece of Furniture Designed by Maria Dlugoborskaya

Extra chairs are very useful, but they take up a lot of storage space at home. "Four Quarters" is a universal object that combines several functions and solves this problem. It is created on the principle of puzzles. When parts are assembled, they appear as a single entity, but when disassembled, they obtain totally different functions. The versatility allows using this piece of furniture to become an organic part of the interior, and its owners will benefit from the additional features.

"Four Quarters" is a coffee table with the possibility of transformation. This piece of furniture looks like a single object of interesting shape. If necessary, the "Four Quarters" can be used as four compact armchairs or a combination of tables and armchairs. This possibility gives many additional functions in any private and public space. The conversion process is convenient and performed easily. Due to the unusual shape, an interesting texture is created on the table surface.

The armchairs are comfortable and designed according to the norms of ergonomics and stability. The building material is made of solid wood with a beautiful combination of textures. The seats are upholstered with leather or textile. The conversion process is convenient and performed easily, with all changes being performed mechanically.

The dimensions of "Four Quarters" are 1250 mm x 1250 mm x 570 mm. The project started in 2017 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The design took into consideration the need for a multi-functional object that reduces consumption and optimizes space and lifestyle.

In the design process, the team faced challenges in finding optimal combinations of table separation and form search. The armchairs had to be stable and comply with the rules of ergonomics. The appearance of the whole structure was intended to be lightweight, airy, and modern when folded and unfolded.

Four Quarters is a coffee table and additional compact armchairs at the same time. It consists of four identical parts that form a coffee table with a combination of wood and leather or textile textures when stacked together like a puzzle. In situations where additional chairs are required, any parts can be moved away, turned over, and transformed into extra compact armchairs. This piece of furniture helps to solve the problem of storage of additional chairs, combining several useful functions instead of one. Therefore, this object may be relevant for both private and public spaces.
