Microflat X: Redefining Space Utility in Interior Design

Creating a Flexible and Efficient Living Space

Inspired by the game Tetris and its tile-matching characteristics, Hsin-Yu Hsieh has designed Microflat X, an innovative interior space that maximizes utility and redefines the concept of small living. With the inclusion of a movable partition, different demands of space usage can be skillfully accommodated.

Living in densely populated cities often means compromising on living space. In Taipei, Taiwan, where housing prices have skyrocketed, microflats have become a popular solution. However, traditional interior design methods that allocate specific areas for specific purposes are no longer viable. This led to the creation of Microflat X, an interior design that emphasizes space sharing and flexibility.

The key feature of Microflat X is the inclusion of a movable partition. This partition increases overall spacing visually and allows for different usage applications at different occasions. The living room and kitchen, which receive the most natural light, are the prime areas where the boundary between spaces expands visually, creating a sense of openness.

The color white plays a significant role in the design, reflecting all wavelengths of light and making the space appear larger. Large pieces of white marble are used in the entrance and bathroom, while PANDOMO, a modern surfacing material technology, provides seamless flooring throughout. The cabinets are painted in white with glimpses of black, creating a unique visual toning. The kitchen cabinets are adorned with touches of blue, adding color and creating a visually soothing environment.

Microflat X boasts a total area of 36.89 square meters, intelligently divided into different functional spaces. The entrance welcomes guests with its pristine white marble flooring, setting the tone for the rest of the microflat. The living room and dining room, spanning 23.66 square meters, provide ample space for relaxation and entertainment. The bedroom, closet, and bathroom are thoughtfully designed to maximize functionality within their compact sizes.

This innovative interior design work by Hsin-Yu Hsieh challenges the traditional notion of space usage. The inclusion of a movable partition allows for adaptability and flexibility, catering to different occasions and needs. Microflat X is a testament to the creativity and resourcefulness of modern interior design, offering a solution to the constraints of small living spaces.

Microflat X was awarded the Bronze A' Design Award in 2019 for its outstanding and creatively ingenious design. This accolade recognizes the incorporation of best practices in art, science, design, and technology, contributing to quality of life improvements and making the world a better place.
