Milk Multifunctional Light

A Unique Lighting Fixture Inspired by Tetra Pak

An utterly novel light fixture achieved by applying an extremely simple processing technique to stainless steel mesh.

An innovative lighting design called Milk Multifunctional Light has caught the attention of design enthusiasts worldwide. Created by designer Gaku Takasu, this unique fixture takes an everyday object and reimagines it with completely different materials, resulting in a charming item easily recognizable by people of all ages and nationalities.

The inspiration for the Milk Multifunctional Light came from the designer's desire to explore the potential of a material that can be processed and molded relatively easily while still allowing light to pass through. The team decided to use stainless steel mesh to create the shape of a Tetra Pak, the global standard milk carton. By painstakingly hand-bending the stainless steel mesh, they were able to add significant flexibility to the metal, giving it a look and feel closer to paper than metal.

The Milk Multifunctional Light is not only visually appealing but also highly versatile. The fixture can be placed on the floor, hung from a wall, or suspended from the ceiling, allowing users to create different lighting arrangements to suit their needs and preferences.

The design process involved shaping sheets of stainless steel mesh into a cylinder and spot-welding the top and bottom. This simple yet effective method resulted in a product that showcases the unique properties of stainless mesh while maintaining a sleek and modern aesthetic. The dimensions of the Milk Multifunctional Light are W170mm x D170mm x H170mm, making it a compact and versatile lighting solution.

The Milk Multifunctional Light made its debut in 2018 at Designart TOKYO and has since garnered attention for its innovative design and functionality. It was awarded the Iron A' Design Award in the Lighting Products and Fixtures Design category in 2019. This prestigious award recognizes well-designed, practical, and innovative creations that meet professional and industrial requirements.

Gaku Takasu, the designer behind the Milk Multifunctional Light, collaborated with technical supporter Masahiro Chabie Ito to bring this unique lighting fixture to life. Their research focused on exploring the possibilities of stainless mesh as a readily processable material by handwork, leading to the development of this remarkable design.

The Milk Multifunctional Light is not only a functional lighting solution but also a testament to the power of creativity and innovation in design. Its unique combination of materials, versatile functionality, and charming design make it a standout piece in any space.
